Stylist 834, 410 questions!

Stylist 834, 410 questions!
UGH! I won't let myself 'play' with my new Rocketeer until I give Dennis back his stylists! and of course, technical difficulty!
The 834 first:
[ATTACH=CONFIG]402270[/ATTACH] Oiled him up, everything shifts, everything moves. The feed dogs move too, but they don't 'advance' the fabric forward. I have moved stitch lengths, pressure . . nothing will change it! What am I doing wrong? Dennis said a repair guy had told them a ton of money to fix it, but he didn't know what was 'wrong' with it. However, the machines share ONE cord. *That* would have been expensive . . . It hums along, but doesn't sew 'forward'!
The 410:
[ATTACH=CONFIG]402271[/ATTACH]this guy is a tension problem. I studied tension fix posts on the board. Both threads feed through ok, and you can feel the change when you do adjust the tension. I am using the same type of thread, just different colors. I re-wound the bobbin on the 410. No matter what I change, the bottom tension is too tight. Stitches look great from the top, but the top thread pulls to the underside.

Am I threaded correctly? which direction should the thread be leading in, to the bobbin case, from the bobbin. The machine bobbins were different directions, so no clue there.

On the 834, the stitch LENGTH knob is set near or at 0. It won't feed there but things will move. I can see the little red dash on the opposite side of the knob. The red dash is near the longest stitch end.
On the 410, put the face plate back on it so you can run the thread through the guides.
It looks like it uses the Apollo (plastic) bobbin case, if so you should be using plastic Class 66 bobbins. But it won't hurt if you use the metal ones.
When the full bobbin is in the case with the thread through the tension spring it should rotate counter clock wise as you pull on the thread.
To set the thread tension remove the bobbin case, put a bobbin in it and thread it through the tension spring. Hold the end of the thread letting the case dangle. Does it fall away? No, then gently loosen the tension screw until it does. Then tighten it just till it doesn't. Hold it out and jerk the thread just a little bit. Does the bobbin case drop and stop? If yes put it back in the machine and thread it up. If no tighten the adjusting screw just a tiny bit and repeat until it does.
If you've done all these things and the bobbin tension is still too tight, the bobbin case might need to be cleaned. Put it in a zip-lock bag and carefully remove the tension spring. ( That way you don't loose those tinsy itty bitty screws ) Clean it and the case well. Reassemble it. Run the attaching screw down tight, but not too tight. Turn the adjusting spring down till it stops then back it out 1/2 turn. Do the same thing as I posted just above to test and set it.
If none of this does anything then there is something, dirt, lint, thread, a busted needle ( I found one like that) interfering with the thread travel.

I just had the problem you're having with the 410 with a 15 clone. I did everything, I thought. Then I tightened the top tension two full spins. Now it sews perfectly. What???? It sewed perfectly a month ago before it was moved to make room for the Elna so I could repair a dog leash. Maybe I bumped it moving it, but 2 full turns???

I forgot to mention that on both of those machines the needle goes in flat to the back, and is threaded front to rear.

THREAD: Most of these vintage machines such as Lara's 834 and 410 and irishrose's 15 clone were made when size 50 or 50wt ( I've seen it labeled both ways ) was the most common thread. I have instructions from several Singers and some Japanese machines that specify setting and adjusting the tension with this thread. So I've been grabbing every spool of 50 wt thread I can find. It may not be suitable any more to sew with, but it is perfect to set the tensions on these old(er) machines.
I've found that once set with the original 50wt thread they will work well with the newer stuff ... generally.

Joe - the fifty wt thread is a great idea. I have my grandmother's sewing box, so I will see what I can find. On the 834, I did move the length around, and it didn't make a difference . . . I will check that, make sure, and try again. tomorrow! ;0)

You might need to pull the end panel off (handwheel end) and check to make sure the stitch length controls are working. That is a very complex control set up that not only controls the stitch length, but reverse and the back and forth movement of the stretch stitches.
