Default SINGER 301 problem........fabric not moving...feed dogs???

I have a problem that may have been solved on here someplace, but I cant find anything........I just got a 301A from a Salvation Army store, total cost of $32,00, in a Queen Anne cabinet............it is dirty, but looks good otherwise... when I tried sewing on it, the machine runs and sounds fine, but the fabric isnt moving.........the feed dogs "feel" like they are down, but I havent found anything that would move them UP if that is what is wrong...anyone else have this problem and what did you do about it?

The feed dogs on the 301 can be lowered for FMQ. I believe the control for lowering and raising is near the bobbin case (under the lift up bed).

No experience with the 301, but from the sounds of the previous posters description and from my experience with a 306, it may be similar. on the 306 there is a "Thumb screw" ( looks like the knob/screw that holds the foot on) underneath the machine. Flip the machine back and look for a knob on one of the shafts of "Forks" and see if it can be turned easily, on my 306 it is tightened all of the way to engage or raise the feed dogs, if I am right ( I am sure someone will post and let us know ) and you are having trouble finding it, I can take a picture and post it for you.

Good luck and congrats on your find !

Yep, lift up the hinged part and you will find the knob for raising the feed dogs under there.

Which color is your 301? You do know that they are addictive and once you see how it sews you will want one in each of the colors...heheheh

ETA: There is a Yahoo group for Singer slant machines. Here is the link:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/singer...guid=236813242

You can get lots of info on there and from their file section.

Here is the knob that lowers and raises the feed dogs. Occasionally on the 301's I've repaired the knob will be stuck solid. But, turn it as much as you can, until the feed dogs are in the highest position.

Might also check you stitch length setting. Could be set incorrectly.

best,

to FMQ on 301A you lower the feeddogs with that knob (there is a slot for a screwdriver in center of knob) and you set the stitch length at zero which is the half way mark between forward and reverse.....you probably need to adjust both of these things if the last person to use it was FMQ or doing embroidery.

Thanks Candace. I own two 301 machines but have not gotten to FMQ on either of them yet. Photos are so good to learn from.

FMQ is the acronym for free motion quilting.
