I am thinking about buying a used/vintage machine for my young daughter to learn on. Someone nearby has a 1969 SINGER TOUCH & SEW MODEL 648 machine listed on Ebay for $55. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT Anybody know anything about these machines? I think I'll head on over to google now....

I have a Phoenix treadle. I haven't used it, but have one!! They look a LOT like the Wheeler and Wilson. You are lucky to have found the feet/accessories with yours, as they are very hard to come by. They have an unusual way of attachment--back clamping, but the top has a cross on it. I think I have two feet with mine; will probably never find any more to go with it. I have a friend with one, and she loves hers.

If this gives you any idea, two of the nicknames are "Touch and Swear" and "Touch and Throw". I know someone will jump in and tell how they LOVE theirs, but the machines are at the far side of their lifecycles. With the exception of the 600 and 603, the machines all have plastic gears, most of which have crumbled by now. They cost more to fix than they're worth, and many repair people won't bother.

The 600 and 603 both have metal gears. I have had one of each, and they worked great. The only thing to worry about on them (as far as I know) is the in-place bobbin winder. Sometimes they need work.

My oldest daughter came along and brought her in. The finish is beautiful. What appears to be pits in the picture are just crud on the machine. There is a little wear on the front edge of the bed. The cabinet looks better than the picture, too. Very solid, but it does have some nicks on the legs. A knee pedal, which I actually like. She will need a new belt before any real sewing is done, but the whole machine sounds very quiet and strong. All my Elna attachments will fit. The feed dogs drop, so she can help the 301 with quilting. The harp is a little bigger than the 301.

Kathie, when I got my 301 I had to get a new tension unit for it, because the springs inside of it were just shot. It wouldn't adjust at all, even after I tried cleaning it up. That may be your problem.

I vote for Touch and Throw myself on those 648s and newer0 --but LOVE the OLD Singers like my 15-91, Naomi!
