I had posted my latest find the other day in the Pictures section..

a 1923 Singer 99 Hand Crank

...but now I have a question.

The face plate seems a bit grimy, I'd almost say it looks like nicotine film of some sort.. but there is no odor.
It's just a yellowish brown film.

I've read about non-pumice GoJo and OxyClean.
Are those just for the Black part or the face place/wheel/etc as well?

I just want to make sure I'm not going to do irreparable damage!

And.. Do you think the wheel is supposed to be more polished chrome-like or just metal?

I've not actually sewn anything on her yet - but she turns as smooth as silk and so quietly I am amazed!

This is one of my dream machines - found it last Thursday on Craigslist for $80. :)

That is a beautiful machine!!!

I never tried Oxyclean but I know the go jo works great. I think all it needs is a good polishing, a little oil and use her like you stole her!!

Totally crazy!!! Run....don't walk, those decals look just great. I'd like to get a treadle next, either a Red-eye or Sphinx...not sure the bank account will agree though.

Fingers crossed you get it!

Never heard from the seller. Listing has been deleted. :(

Oh no!!!! How rude, I know exactly how you feel because last week I replied to a Freecycle Ad where the man had a 'treadle and another Singer both in good condition' that he wanted to go to a good home and be saved from landfill. I couldn't collect on Sunday as per his request because I was a couple of hours away but promised I would be there on Monday around lunchtime. And just like your lister....no reply!!

I couldn't do that to anyone, being courteous costs absolutely nothing.

Hope there's a better one in your future.

Bronwyn ;-)

~Thanks Billy :)
I feel like she's got the seal of approval! lol

QuiltnCowgirl:
If you have an Android phone - may have it for iphone too - get an App called "Craigslist Notification"
This App got me my latest machine.
I swear by it.
I missed a few nice nice things and got frustrated.
This App is set up on my phone to search all "For Sale" ads that include the words "sewing" "fabric" "quilt" and "quilting"
..and is updated every 10 minutes. (my choice on the time)

The ad for the machine I just got had been posted LESS than 30 minutes when I called and made arrangements to pick it up. In less than two hours it was in my hands!

Do you need bobbins for your touch and sew? I had a 750 touch and sew I have alot of bobbins if you need them.

Thank you, but no thank you! I don't plan on sewing with this machine. I'm checking if the person that gave it to me wants it back. She couldn't get it to sew for her, only bird's nest mess in bobbin area for her each time she tried to use it.
She may want it back now that I got it to sew.

Multiple e-mails to seller and friend and finally got a message from the friend, "Got it."

I'm home now, and can't wait to see the friend and the new machine. I can do the upper body happy dance, the lower bod will have to wait a while.
I am sorry to hear you had to have surgery, but everyone I know that had a knee replacement wished they hadn't waited so long to get it done!

On a happy note, congratulations for the new 301!

Nancy
I second all of this!! Knee and 301!! Hope you get on your feet (well...knee!) soon, and get sewing on your new 301.
Well, I am up and walking, (slowly) but the 301 is still a little over an hour away. The other scores are 1 new treadle, two new cabinet machines and a portable, all still in the van, so I haven't gotten the numbers to run date checks. Two are a brand with which I am unfamiliar, made in Japan, and still old iron beauties. Now, I've just made arrangements with a seller another hour and a half from here for two treadle heads, to go into the two empty treadle bases I have. He'll be coming into town on the 6th, and will deliver, so I won't have hands on for them for a while either. The 4 machines cost a total of $140, and got a zillion attachments and Grist attachment kits, including button hole. The two heads are $50 for the pair.

Insurance does not cover the new machines, even though they were "hospital acquired affections."

When I was a young child, I used to design my own clothes and my DGM used to do the sewing...which often caused a lot of problems because she didn't use a purchased pattern. I had to stand very straight while she held a sheet of newspaper against me while cutting the 'pattern' with the scissors in the other hand, a few times my clothes (and skin) got nicked!! LOL A left hander using right handed scissors is not a good combination!! LOL

From around 6-7 yrs old I used to do hand embroidery even though my parents tried for many, many years to convince me that sewing (of any kind) was a complete waste of time...but I persisted through all those fights and arguments and later took myself to night dressmaking classes for a year before I was married. Then a few years later when DS was a baby, I returned to classes and continued for another 10 yrs through the whole range of dressmaking and home dec classes because it was something I really enjoyed.

Sewing is a huge part of my life as I make all my own clothes, including bras, underwear and swimsuits, home dec items (including quilts) and some clothes for 2 x DGD's along with dolls clothes etc. If something can be made on a sewing machine I'll try it...and before next summer I plan to make a shade-sail to cover the fishpond during the summer months. I made one for my last house and it worked brilliantly.

Unfortunately there are no quilt stores closeby, in fact there's not much in this small town where I moved recently. Sometime I'll check if there are any sewing groups but at the moment there are not enough hours in the day because I've just had a new house built with a large sewing room and still have to do all the landscaping etc so I've got more than enough to keep me busy....then I suddenly get addicted to vintage sewing machines!!! LOL

Wow, that is really young to loose your husband. Now a days most kids aren't even getting married till they are mid 30's! What a rough way to start your grown up life - I didn't feel grown up until I turned 40 even though I had been married since I was 17!

You are quite amazing. I have never tried to make 'all' my own clothes - I have done most at one time or another - but not bras and swim suits! I am always in awe over people like you as my Mother was like that. She'd make anything that could be made! She was much more talented than I am! I have done 3 complete weddings, but that was following patterns!
