Charlee, the White Dating site does not list any 'Florence' nor 'New Florence' under the White, Mason line. But if you go to ISMACS needle list, they list several machines called "Florence" under the Mason line and Davis? The ISMACS site also lists only two 'Challenge" machines - one was made by Davis, which would be consistant with Kathies machine taking the Boye 10 and the other one is made by National.

It is interesting that my Hitachi treadle is not even listed as existing at all!

Ps for those of you going to this site for the first time, you use the second column, which is the machine name. The second column is in alpabetical order, followed by the first column, which is the manufacturer's name!
Which White dating site are you refering to Nancy?

This one:
http://community.webshots.com/user/arachnesobsession

refers to the New Florence as a "Mason D" and implies that it's a White machine, but the Mason company sold to National, (can't recall the date off the top of my head) and then National was absorbed by White in 1916. According th ethe webshots site, my machine's serial number isn't listed, altho some shortly after that are. The implication is that my machine is pre-1910, but it sure looks a LOT like some of the White machines I've seen out there...
Charlee, you are right. I just went and looked and she has a 'New Florence' shown - picture - under the White Mason Line. It is a 1912 machine. Under the ISMACS site there is also a 'New Florence' listed under the Mason line, AKA., White. I was looking up 'Florence., not 'New Florence. My bad!

Honestly I would stay away from Yahoo just because they sell your information for one and secondly they tell you that they give it all to different authorities to monitor your emails. Anything Yahoo I try to stay as far away as I can. I have books here that will tell you anything you need to know about your motor and what part #'s you need to find.

It is probably caused by dried up oil or 3 in one oil or some rust. You can fix it up if you can follow directions. There might be more info - look in the vintage sewing machine shop - http://www.quiltingboard.com/virtual...jsp?vsnum=1013
miriam thank you for the info .Dottie Bug
Just gotta ask....is 3 in 1 oil not good for machines? How about cleaning them??

DH has done it on mine. I would like for him to do a tutorial some time. Until then, the service manual tells how to take the motor out of the machine. You can get a free service manual on line here: http://parts.singerco.com/IPsvcManuals/306W25.pdf You have to scroll down 125 pages or so but it is there and very helpful. It's for a 401 but it is about the same inside. Maybe Ismacs has something more specific. Then take the motor to a small motor repair shop and have them go over it. When they are done, you follow the service manual instructions to return the motor. It is pretty easy.

Congrats and have fun with it!

Billy, I hope all goes well for you. Please rest, that machine isn't going anywhere...it will wait for you when you are better.

I do hope they have identified what type of blood cancer you do have and it can be cured quickly.

If they don't know yet, have them check for Waldenstrom's disease, a rare form of blood cancer.

Rest and eat healthy!!
They do but its not that, I forgot what they said the choices were all I know is I went pretty much blank when they told me about it. But they said I will live to tell about it so thats a good thing! But this is all from getting hit in the face by the stupid copperhead. I guess that was all that it needed to trip its trigger.

Nancy, I don't think you will find much info on the Hitachi since it is a Japanese machine (and I do believe this machine made a special trip over for someone's personal usage here in the States). The Japanese are known to use Romanji (Roman characters) in their logo/name along with the Japanese characters. Hitachi is mainly an appliance company that may have made some sewing machines and then moved on to other appliances and electronics.

Your machines are beautiful. Why is the National called a two spools? I only see one spool holder on it. Kathie

[quote=Charlee]From John's needle list:

Davis Challenge 1x2 C 1X 10 F FF B 54 17 F;DD;B C 673 Davis [N.S. F.S.]
National Challenge 20x1 E Z 14 J BB C 56 15 J;K E 53 Eldredge F.S.

So if her Challenge takes a 20x1, would that not make it a National made machine?
ACK! I get more confused by the minute...gotta LOVE it!

Yes, but Kathie just told me that she found a needle package with the Challenge marked 127X1, which is neither a 20X1, (Boye 4), nor a 1x2, (Boye 10 Davis long). The 127x1 is a Boye 18, the needle the W&W and Singer 9W use! Go figure! I am sticking to my guns that, that Challenge is either a Davis or a National!

Nancy[quote]

Ok I just compared Kathie's Challenge cabinet to my Davis Vertical Feed, and the two cabinets have the exact same drawer pulls! The cabinets look almost alike too!

It is a paraffin based oil and will leave a build up after so many years. You need a good sewing machine oil and Walmart sells Singer brand oil. I buy mine by the gallons and I will have to see what I pay for it but it is not much $35 or so.
