The Rocketeer is a 500a from 1961 that I have been playing with all day. I got her yesterday from a yard sale for $15, and she is perfect!

Your machines are beautiful. Why is the National called a two spools? I only see one spool holder on it. Kathie
The other is the one you use for the bobbin.

miriam thank you for the info .Dottie Bug
Just gotta ask....is 3 in 1 oil not good for machines? How about cleaning them??
3-in-1 oil is very bad - when it dries it sets up like varnish - it is pretty hard to get off too - ask me how I know this. Please use Sewing Machine Oil. It should be clear liquid. If you have used 3-in-1 and it has dried up you can get it off by using kerosene if it doesn't work try denatured alcohol - better be very careful of your paint or any plastic parts. I had a machine I very liberally soaked with 3-in-1 oil. After it set a while nothing moved, it looked like it had an orange coating of gunk. It took a lot of work to get it all off. The machine is fine now.

The second spool holder is under the machine where there would usually be a bobbin or shuttle!

So if her Challenge takes a 20x1, would that not make it a National made machine?
ACK! I get more confused by the minute...gotta LOVE it!
Just from the shape and position of items on the machine, I say it looks like a National.

I should be but I have to limit my activities because of the long term side effects but it will not be too bad. I am just waiting to get over this so I can get on my bike again and start pedaling. By then the triple digit heat days will be over with and it will actually be enjoyable weather again.

Rats! I've b een using oil that came with a sewing machine but it is red. I suppose I'd better get out some kerosene and re"oil" it then try and find some Singer oil. Can I buy it and grease online somewhere?

Joanns and Walmart carry it so you can get it from them.

Thank you Monica! Willie Sue is a very pretty old gal.

And for you guys all trying to guess what Kathie's Challenge is - I just compared her cabinet to my Davis Vertical Feed cabinet! The two cabinets have the exact same drawer pulls, and the exact same shape.

It is a paraffin based oil and will leave a build up after so many years. You need a good sewing machine oil and Walmart sells Singer brand oil. I buy mine by the gallons and I will have to see what I pay for it but it is not much $35 or so.

Billy
Walmart sells it??? I was just there and have not seen any! What about the gear grease? Or motor grease?
