OMG! What a pretty mess! Interesting what can happen in a barn. That is a nice find though!

Great deal and find! Beautiful cabinet and machine! Both are going to be gorgeous once they are cleaned up.

Congrats on your 201! Still my favorite Singer machine since it sews so quietly and makes beautiful stitches top and bottom of fabric.

Jan, it's Singer's #42 cabinet. Not rare. ISMACS website describes it as:

Finished in handsomely grained woods that reflects good taste in keeping with other fine furniture, this modern sewing cabinet also serves as a writing desk of unusual beauty. Four, spacious, dust-proof drawers provide ample room for all sewing accessories, stationery and correspondence. The top right drawer contains a spool rack and an oil can holder. The roomy drawer at the left has a built-in ink well and pencil tray.

Comfortable handling of bulky material is afforded by the large extension leaf

Nice machine! I have it's sister! :) (Not the cabinet tho, I'm still looking for a nicer one that what mine came in!)
Thanks Charlee !

Texas Jan

As Charlee said, not really rare. I have the same one--with a 201 Centenial too. :) (June 13, 1950, Elizabeth, NJ allotment). This was my 1st vintage machine. I found it at an estate sale here in Wichita Falls, not too far away from your friend's machine. Love the storage space in it. The built-in pedal slides back in to stay out of the way when you push the bench in. Mine has a small bench seat rather than a chair. I actually just found the spool holder that Charlee mentioned, never knew I had it tucked away in the bench storage! It has a nice solid feel, and I like the deco styling.

From some internet research, I believe it is a Nettleton and Raymond chainstitch machine from about 1857-1858. They were made in Brattleboro, Vermont. Its quite portable, only about 10" long.

Its cute as a button though !
Neat machine! I like how the gearing and what would be the "insides" of a modern machine are all exposed. It's like pointing out how modern and "machine age" you are to have this in your home.

That will make one heck of a before and after picture! I bet that thing shines, the decals look so nice.

http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/for/2552323113.html It is NOT mine - but, this looks interesting. Don't need one though. I wonder how old something like that would be.

DH asked me why I didn't clean it up a bit before I took the pictures, that is exactly why!
