Ok for you Rocketeer folks, are any of you having trouble with the cams wearing out? I use my 503a Rocketeer all the time for decorative stitches on my little Patchabilities. I use mostly the #8 cam, which is now slipping and messing up sometimes. I did some research and the only thing people complained about with those machines were the cams. The people who bought them loved the machines because they are all metal, well-made machines, but couldn't understand why Singer made such a nice machine then used plastic to make the cams. The cams wear out! Has anyone tried filing off the rough edges on those cams to see if they will have more life. Now I am a little concerned about getting a 319W -it uses cams too. The top hat cams are easy to find, not sure about the flat cams of the 319w?

What a beautiful job of restoring that Ruby. I know mine is in bad shape but I may be able to gently clean the decals on the upper parts and repaint the bed. The cabinet will need some work, there are strip underneath of 3/16th wood that has come off.
When I googled New Home Ruby Sewing Machine, the www.millmuseum.org came up. They have several plus a whole catalog to look at.
I hope to teach my GD to sew on the Ruby. She is an artist so maybe can get her away from Anime for awhile. Wish me luck.

Nancy thank for the warning. I have one other Davis that I started with but still do not have running. I learned the hard way how easily their decals disappear. So now I will have two Davis heads to go in that treadle cabinet.
I really want all those pretty flowers to show again.

I found the paint on my Davis to be rather....I don't know that "fragile" is the word I'm looking for, but for lack of a better word, I'll use it. I didn't lose any decals, but every time I cleaned, more black rubbed off. I finally decided that it was paint instead of dirt and quit trying to clean it ALL off! :lol: When I waxed it, I used a caranuba car wax, and in the places where the wax was a little thicker and didn't dry as fast, the black paint turned GREEN!! OMG! I was beside myself and almost in tears to have those green streaks in my beautiful black machine...but as they dried and "cured" it turned black again...
I think the black is more "sensitive" than are the decals...but if the black UNDER the decals loosens, the decals come off with it...

I looked at the finish under bright light last night, and it really looks like someone tried to paint it. Or the original japan "melted"?? Is that possible? I can see the decals (kind of) sort of "under" a dark covering....like paint didn't stick to the decals. I don't know. Very hard to figure it out. Anyone seen anything like this before?
