I usually have to go around each quilt twice because I have never got Betty to stay consistent in her stitch. She sews consistent with a nice stitch when doing only 2 layers, but when I have a binding to attach and I am going through 7 layers, she zips through those layers like butter, but her stitch gets really funky, hence I always go around twice. The plus side is that because she walks the quilt, I never get bunched fabric or tucks! That is the only reason I keep using her to put on bindings, even though I have to go twice to get a tight stitch.

Besides using my Davis for attaching binding, I also straight stitch quilt with her because of that wonderful walking foot. Sometimes I have noticed that the stitches have loosened; those are the times that the tension dial has moved to the loose setting. I have noticed that the vibration off of the machine has cause the tension dial to shift. This isn't caused by the treadle since treadling is smooth and quiet. I just check on the tension dial setting with the start of a new row.

Was disappointed yesterday when I went to check on a buttonhole attachment for Stella (New Home). Thought just maybe I had found a buttonhole attch. that would work. The lady said it was a top clamp, but when we checked it the opening was narrower than mine. Maybe there isn't such a thing for Stella.

Charlee- a while back (I can't find the post) you mentioned about you needed to fix your machine because of the "free wheeling." What did you mean by that? Please forgive all my questions, am just learning!!!

Randa, we do this at a fabric store. They are a lot of fun. Most of all the stores around here do them. There is a Girls night out almost every Saturday night somewhere. Kathie

Modified 301 feet still aren't great walking feet. None of the 301 walking feet available (modified or not!!) have narrow feed dogs. So....the feed dogs are too wide and don't align with the machine feed dogs. Will it work? Yes, but not as engineered. Walking feet are supposed to have upper feed dogs and lower feed dogs that work together to feed fabric through the machine equally distributing the pull of the fabric. This doesn't and can't happen when the upper and lower feed dogs don't meet properly.

Nancy, you can buy slant shank 1/4" feet and FMQ feet if you don't already own them. But, the guide is right there on the plate so you can also just use a seam guide, moleskin etc.

Nancy,

No, the 301 does not use low shank feet. It uses Singer slant shank feet.

Candace,

Great, I was afraid that my explanation was too long and confusing.
BTW do you live in my area? I'm in Roseville near Sacramento.

Are you meaning the comment I made about the "stop motion" not working? (the "clutch" for stopping the needle action while winding a bobbin) All fixed...pulled the wheel and cleaned it, works great now. The other minor "fix" was to adjust the bobbin winder so it would connect with the wheel.
The machine moves so freely that when I stop and lift the presser foot the needle falls, but I can live with that!

Miz Johnny,

I also have 3 of these. All branded differently, one's a Davis, one's an Empress and the Western Electric. I sure would love a handcrank attachment for one of these National machines. I can dream, right?

Yes, I'm in your area! Elk Grove:> I'm an electric girl only at this point, though. I am eyeing two spool machines now. You all are bad enablers!
