I have been working on a Singer 27 in a Treadle Cabinet from 1896 for a good friend of mine. It has been in their family for generations but only used as a piece of furniture for at least the last 40 years. The machine was neglected for at least that long too. I finished restoring it yesterday and wanted to share some before and after pictures of this wonderful machine. I did not repaint or replace a single part on it. I used car wax to clean it and followed up with sewing machine oil. The varnish was badly oxidized so I did not rub hard. I just gently waxed it and I had no additional "silvering" of the decals and had no loss of any of them either. The metal parts were cleaned with wadding polish and some were polished with a Dremel with a buffing wheel with jewelers rouge. Some of the parts were really rusted badly and pitted too but I was able to improve them quite a bit. Some parts like the foot lever, I thought that would have to be replaced, but it came out as smooth and shiny as a new piece.

Meguiar's Cleaner Wax to clean the decals. Then I followed that up with Singer oil. There is a lot of elbow grease involved too.
Thank you Glen. I didn't even know a couple of the decals were still there under the thick layers of dirt. And the rear inspection plate, I thought that it was plain. I noticed the design on it when I was looking at the pictures I took of it and saw the design on it only then because it was so rusted.

My 127 was like that and I got it clean ... I think. But not that nice.

I've had Meguiar's Cleaner Wax take off paint on some machines. Always test a place. The machine looks great Grant! I am going after one today in worse shape. I have one here with initials carved deeply into the bed - I'm hoping to 'marry' them - maybe have one good one some time. I have a growing appreciation for those old ladies. I think the bobbin and shuttle were kind of a turn off for a very long time. Muv's info saved the day.

Miriam, I am careful to do a test to see if it is ok first. But I have not damaged any decals or paint with wax. I have some other wax that I use on them if it is more sensitive to the Meguiar's. It is called Wizards Shine Master. It is more expensive and harder to find so it is my go to if the Meguiar's doesn't give good results. It is a milder wax.
