My newest machine is a 401A, given to me a couple of years ago from a friend when my 500 model went kaput. It's been the only machine I sew with until I got the White treadle.

I started a sampler quilt with the White and I must say, she sews so smooth I couldn't believe it. I should have wonderful leg muscles by the time I''m done.

I just won a 99K crank machine yesterday. Can't wait till it comes in. I can start working on the arm muscles. Too bad they don't come left handed.

And last but not least I bought a Featherweight last week but still waiting for it to come in.

So am I actually starting vintage and moving backwards?

Yep! You're starting vintage and moving back!! NOT a bad thing, not bad at all!!

And yes. Your 401A is vintage...and I want to see pics of that handcrank when you get it, and of your sampler when you get it pieced!

Just for the fun of it, just where is the cut off for a machine to be considered "vintage" for this forum?

Joe, it depends on who you ask! For me? Anything before 1990.... doesn't make it a GOOD machine, as many of those have the nylon "innards", but I still consider them vintage.

Technically, the word "vintage" should be accompanied by a year...as in "Vintage 1950" or "Vintage 1986".... just as technically, it's not an antique until it's 100 years old...

The 401 is vintage, for sure.

People sure abuse both the words "vintage" and "antique" don't they?

Sigh, I'm not near a hundred yet, so why do I feel so much like an antique?
