I have just started making this block of the month, I am in England and we are way behind you people in the States!, and I am finding it very difficult, all those HSTs are driving me crazy. However, I love the fabrics. Here is my question for anyone who has made it.

I have the special HST ruler - I have worked out how you use it with hsts, how do you use it with quarter square triangle blocks? Shall I just give up and make everything possible as HSTs? It is very difficult to get the sizing right, I am very inclined to make each block with a small border and size up each square by half an inch. Has anyone tried this? Has anyone finished this quilt? The first block was Not Easy!!

Interested in this one too. I am having a hard time getting the first blocks finished size right too. I get one side correct and the other is short!

I am making this quilt, too. I have purchased the first two blocks, but I haven't started anything, yet. This afternnoon I have an appointment with my LQS lady and she is going to show me a few tricks for making the first block. I bought "Triangles on a Roll" as she suggested and also a CD that allowes me to print out pages of foundations for HST, QST and flying geese. It is ISBN 978-1-936207-05-3.

The blocks kits are expensive and I am afraid of making a mistake before I even start.

Go here: http://www.quiltinaday.com/RulerInst...ulerInsWEB.pdf and print out these instructions. You do not have to have the ruler to do it this way. Just put a piece of tape across the corner of one of your rulers at the right number. Example: if you need 2 inch FINISHED blocks put your tape from 2 inch to 2 inch mark, but make sure your tape EDGE is on the 2 inch and the body of your tape is toward your 3 inch mark.

Clear as mud? I will try and post a pic tonight when I get home. Right now I need to get ready for work.

She also has video, just look around her site.
They are really not as hard as everybody makes them out to be after you figure out the magic....

I have found the ruler and it is called a Tailor Perfect Half-Square and Quarter Square Triangles Ruler. Which is great except that I had no instructions with it, talking of which I shall go and Google it to see if some are online.

I have spoken to the quilt shop who send me the bom and the lady there says that she is making everything in HSTs using this ruler and the square on square, sew and cut method for HSTs and not using any triangle to triangle sewing.

Well, I have worked it out and this is all very well, except that some of the HST blocks become very small with this method, especially in block 3 - not small for people who make miniature quilts of course, but I expect they use foundation anyway, and I can never get the hang of that! So triangulations are out. Good luck, Cherylynne and Chickadee, please do let me know how you get on and what your lady says Cherylynne - are you doing the whole thing on foundation?
