Just Takes 2 Quilt-Along!

Hi ya’ll! Welcome to the Just Takes 2 Quilt Along for those who are working on Bonnie Hunter’s Orca Bay Mystery Quilt. Everyone is welcome to come and play along with us!!!

This thread will be the "homebase" for our Quilt-Along. We are going to hang out here to chat, share pointers and encouragement, and cheer each other on. We will also have the pictures in the same thread so that there will be no confusion.

I will be acting as your host through this journey, any questions, comments or conflicts can be addressed to me through a p.m. I know you will find her very knowledgeable and helpful. Patrice J. will be lurking in the background to boink me in the head if ya’ll misbehave really badly.

Introduction to the Quilt

Just Takes 2 is a Mystery BOM hosted by Sentimental Stitches and Dear Jane. You can find the quilt information at www.justtakes2.com

Ground rules and Guidelines

As much as everyone hates “rules,” it is necessary to lay groundwork so that we all understand up front what to expect and what is expected so things can run smoothly. Please take the time to read the guidelines set forth here.

1. Be kind, there will be No Flaming. This is a very friendly, encouraging and supportive group. Be patient, please keep in mind that there are those participating here with a wide range of quilting skills from the novice to the master and every level between. We want this to be enjoyable for all.

2.All copyrights will be honored and protected.
Because this is a copyrighted quilt we will not permit uploading of the PDF files of this mystery quilt. That decision is based on ethics and because it is much safer from a legal perspective than trying to guess what would or wouldn't get somebody or successfully sued.
If you need help finding the patterns, I am more than happy to help you find them.

3. This is not a swap it is a Quilt-a-long. This means you are making your own quilt. Therefore you can choose whichever fabrics you like best.

I hope everyone will enjoy this quilt along as much as I will. Can’t wait to see your progress!

I am doing this but must wait until Feb to buy my fabric. I am going to make it for my sister who likes orange and turquois. (sp) I am looking for Indian motifs or figures for the embroidery part. Should be fun.

lfstamper 01-10-2012 11:24 AM

Sounds like fun. I will watch to see all the great work.

DoriDeS 01-10-2012 06:53 PM

Hey I am doing this quilt :o) Just finished the 3rd block today. I am doing a block a day as soon as I get the patterns. I am using scraps....I can't seem to throw anything away so my blocks are white's and creams for the back ground fabrics and I have tons of scraps for the colored parts. So far my blocks are way way pretty....can't wait to get more block patterns :o)

Cottage Dee 01-11-2012 04:43 AM

Hi Dori, Me too...I have way too many scraps, but I'm in FL until mid=March, so I'm collecting the patterns, (but, the urge is there to get started, know what I mean? Might have to buy a little fabric to get started.....) ah, well..... isn't that the way it goes? But what we've been given so far makes me think this will be a great quilt!

Cottage Dee 01-11-2012 04:56 AM

BTW, does anyone know the finished size of JT2?

brookemarie19 01-11-2012 04:58 AM

I am going to be using the kona cream muslin as it was pretty thick and just the right price (as I am supposed to be using stash this year and had to sneak it by lol) For my color, I am using black as I know I have at least 3 yards of black and hope I have more hiding around here somewhere...
I love the idea of it being done in scraps! Dori, do you have any pics? I would love to see it!

In the basic info part, it says that without borders it should be 72 x 90

Cottage Dee 01-11-2012 05:00 AM

Thanks, Brooke, my brain sees this morning, but somehow is not registering!

brookemarie19 01-11-2012 05:03 AM

Thats how I am without my coffee, since the little one makes me get up so early (and I stay up late trying to catch up on bonnie hunter's orca bay that she just finished lol

ljs317 01-11-2012 05:36 AM

Ok here are my "Just Takes 2" blocks 1 - 2 - 3 :o)

humbird 01-11-2012 11:05 AM

Well shoot! I really didn't plan to do this quilt........however I did print the the pattern from the 1st instalement, .......but after seeing the scrappy blocks (scrappy is my favorite!) I may just have to go get to work!! What ever is a gal supposed to do! I have so many projects started, needing to be finished and then I start another? I'm 75 years old. I hope I live long enough to finish at least a few more! But its soooo much fun "starting" a new project!!

Anael 01-12-2012 01:32 AM

I started this one too! I don't know if I can keep up but I will try. Made two blocks (the easy ones) yesterday and I'm working on the big block now.

stichinluvr 01-12-2012 06:22 AM

I'm doing mine in purples for my DD. I'm using scraps so hopefully it will come out OK. I have 4 blocks finished but I don't have pictures yet. Maybe this weekend I can get them done.

Nancy in Louisiana 01-12-2012 08:44 AM

I want to do this but am confused as to where the patterns come from. Looks like a lot of fun, and a great way to use up some of those leftovers.

sewNso 01-12-2012 09:09 AM

i'm going to play along. printed off the lst months blocks. and yes,,,,, they remind me of Jane. a lot. am finishing up quilting her. on my last row before a final row of tri's. hand quilted her. I sooooo enjoyed making a jane, and was thinking of doing another, but this will work. i like the size of the blocks. Yaaaaa Hoooooo. for a good project. thanks ever so much.

quiltinglady-1 01-12-2012 02:01 PM

I need to ask a really dumb question, please. What is "flaming"?

brookemarie19 01-13-2012 05:42 AM

In my opinion flaming is when someone is talking someones work down. We are a very friendly group and don't want anyones feelings hurt. Pretty much it jut means be nice to everyone and if someone doesn't agree with something else said we just try to let it go so that there aren't any fights. I haven't ever seen an issue like this arise in a quilt along but we have to put it in the rules anyways lol

TOOMANYUFO'S 01-13-2012 04:14 PM

I will join your group. I just haven't decided on a color yet. The scrappy ones are very nice. I am doing the Orca Bay but have only just started. My dd is sewing the rows together on hers. I will probably be 3 yrs completing it. It will be a WIP. I just wish I had chosen different colors. Is there a new DJ starting?

brookemarie19 01-13-2012 05:40 PM

I am getting closer with the orca bay. I feel I am far enough that I am hoping to do steps one and two next week for this one. I did cut my muslin fabric down though. I bought the 90 width as it was priced better but I worried about cutting such long strips for the quilt and then not have enough in length. You guys should have seen it lol. My older two kids held all 4.5 yards up across the dining room while I cut on the top crease. It was just too funny. The kids thought I was nuts. Especially when I wanted to fold it in half wof to have it like it just came off the bolt. I'm all set up and ready to go now lol.

Caroline S 01-14-2012 08:36 AM

Oh my, another one. I had been planning a black and white quilt for a long time. This one may be a good use for the black and white prints I have been collecting.

quiltinglady-1 01-14-2012 10:53 AM

All this new language that's used today sometimes has this old lady confused. Thanks for defining flaming. In my day, it was just being nice and polite. This is a great group of people on this board, I know because I have been reading it for a very long time and just signed up when the big change was happening to show support to the moderators. Keep up the good work and good luck with your new quilt.

NDQuilts 01-14-2012 06:24 PM

Im in for quilting along. I have five of six blocks done on the first installment, just missing the applique one. Ill bundle it into the installment that should be coming out tomorrow. I chose a white on white and a Thimbleberries blue fabric from the 3s company line. I also chose to add the redwork embroidery in a green color. I think this will look fabulous in scraps, but chose to limit my fabrics this time. I'm considering making another quilt already. Im a sucker for samplers.

brookemarie19 01-15-2012 07:52 AM

The next step is up! For those of you that may need help finding it... Go to www.dearjane.com When you get to her website, scroll down to where you see the Just Takes 2 tab on the left. When you get there, just scroll to the bottom and there is a link to the download.

Here's my picture of the first step.

brookemarie19 01-16-2012 09:17 AM

Goodness Anael! Those are gorgeous!! I absolutely LOVE your red fabric. I need to get my butte in gear and put mine together. Are you going to be doing any embroidery on it?

Anael 01-16-2012 10:01 AM

Thanks brookemarie! I didn't plan to do embroidery but looking at the picture I might.

stichinluvr 01-16-2012 10:43 AM

Ok, so what's wrong with the sizes to cut the blocks in block 8. I am having SO much trouble with them. Any information as to what i'm doing wrong will be appreciated. since I have the day off (MLK day) I wanted to get them done. I know 10 and 11 will take me longer.

Thanks!

Caroline S 01-16-2012 10:51 AM

How do you get the blocks and instructions for Part 1? I got in a little late for this one. If Part 1 in no longer available what is the size of the finished blocks? I can figure out the rest but it would be a lot easier with the instructions.

The pieces you have to cut according to the instructions are too big. Otherwise I didn't have problems assembling it.

The website is listed at the beginning of this thread. The first of the month they come from Sentimental stitches and the 15th they come from dear jane.com

Hope this helps.
