I can't stand it anymore! It's totally petty and non-consequential...but everytime I see the word "ANTIQUE" and look to see an item that was made less than a hundred years ago, I cringe and mutter "VINTAGE". If it's not a hundred years old, it's NOT considered to be antique!!

There. I'm getting off my soapbox. Said my piece, and as I mentioned before, it really doesn't matter...I just had to get it off my chest! (Can you tell I've been surfing Craig's list and ebay?) Thanks! ;)

I thought anything over 25 years old could be considered antique. Could that just be for cars?

So you're saying that anything made less than 100 years ago is vintage, not antique? Does this apply only to sewing machines?

I need to be educated!!!

–adjective
1.
of or belonging to the past; not modern.
2.
dating from a period long ago: antique furniture.
3.
noting or pertaining to automobiles approximately 25 years old or more.

and then...

noun
8.
any work of art, piece of furniture, decorative object, or the like, created or produced in a former period, or, according to U.S. customs laws, 100 years before date of purchase.
9.
the antique style, usually Greek or Roman, especially in art.

So.. the definitions are confusing too. But according to US customs, 100 years old. So I guess we should go by what the US says. :)

It's my understanding that ANYTHING under 100 years old is "vintage"...
"Vintage" is a "variable" word. I've heard that if "they don't make it anymore" that one year later it's considered to be vintage. (What does that mean for something 50 years old, but is still being manufactured?) I've also heard that it's not vintage until it's 25 years old.

The collective "we" assign too many meanings to too many words...

At 54 I am vintage bordering on antique. Some days I am more antique than others.
