In Maine, we can legally acquire a new kitten at 8 weeks of age so it is common practice to wean them by then. This one, however, was still nursing at 10 weeks. So the woman I got her from kept her a bit longer.

I'm a foster parent for kittens at our humane society....little kittens need a lot of socialization..putting her in a room by herself wd be very frightening for her....hold her for at least 20 minutes at a time so she gets used to being petted, etc. also pls play with her...they love anything on a stick and that will get her to come out from anywhere....getting another kitten her size also will give her company and keep her busy as they play together....hope this helps...

I don't know how close the litter box is to her food, but I wd move it away from where she eats.....

The kitten has been held a lot by my DD this morning. Now she is having alone time and will be snuggled and played with a little later. Seems to be adjusting well. Thanks for all the replies.

As long as she can get to the litterbox, she is fine.

If she has not come out in an hour or so, give her something to "hunt", and she will come out to play. I use polyester ribbons about 1/2" wide and about 3 ft long, with a knot in the "hunted" end. Reach down and gently tap the floor or piece of furniture to get her attention, then it slow and twitchy. If her new home has a potty box, food, and fun, she will settle in quicker. Remember that things that reach over a cat's head are usually trying to "eat" the cat. Reach toward her from the side so she sees it is you. Grabbing cats to catch them makes you scary, be soft handed.

We adopted Cleo years ago. She had been abused. When she couldn't see you she thought you couldn't see her. She spent the first 3 days at our house in the corner of a closet with her face to the wall. We left food out and a litter box. After 3 days she bravely sat in the middle of the room and met us and she joined our family. Her favorite spot was the back of the couch so she could see all the comin and going. One day the lady that gave her to us came to see how she was doing. Cleo hid! She had her forever home and lived for many years. Miss her still.
