Default Book recommendation - "Life of Pi"

"Life of Pi" by Yann Martel

I recently finished this book, and after I was done I went to look for more info online. I found out that this book is older than I thought (pub 2001), and also that Ang Lee is making a movie of it due out in December. So now is a good time to read the book - before the movie.

It's about a young man in India who is the son of a Zoo owner. His father decides to sell the zoo and immigrate to Canada. Many of the animals are sold to zoo's in North America. Pi and his family and a score of animals board a ship for NA. The ship sinks. Pi finds himself in a lifeboat with some of the surviving animals from the ship.

The book is beautifully written and Pi is such an amazing and likable character. His insight to religion, zoology, survival, and humanity is delightful and inspiring.

There are some parts that are ... well "raw" (suffice it to say that the specific group of animals on the boat cannot cohabit well). But those bits are thankfully short, and to be honest, necessary.

A very good read, and I look forward to the movie. I'm excited that of all people, it will be Ang Lee who makes it. I'm expecting remarkable cinematography.

Sounds interesting....I will have to put this on my list and possibly put it up on my daughter's Kindle list. Thanks for the recommendation.

Sounds interesting, I'm always on the lookout for books for my quilt/book small group. Every once in awhile we choose a book that we've read and we each make a quilt from something in the book that inspired us. This book sounds as if we'd each find plenty of inspiration.
