We were in a restaurant for breakfast and there was a glass candle holder with water and a penny in it. Of course I asked what it was for and they replied to keep the flies away. They said that it works. My neighbor had construction going on in their house and they did the same and there were no flies around.

I will have to try it, we are inundated with little flies (like small houseflies) that love to come inside and fly around people and annoy them. They don't bite, just buzz. I keep a swatter handy.

At an outdoor family reunion recently, they had strung up plastic baggies with water and pennies in them over the food table. It really did seem to help keep the flies away!!

Must have something to do with the copper!We had to have a new leach field dug a couple of years ago because of roots. When they put the new one down they said copper would keep roots from growing back in the drain field. I had a roll of small copper tubing I had gotten at a yard sale. We cut it into sections and put it in the area where we had problems before....So far so good!

I never heard of that but will give it a try since it is starting to get colder now and they want to come in and share my space

In Wimberly Texas there is an outdoor restaurant that hangs plastic bags with water in them - no pennies. We did some research and it has something to do with the way fly eyes work. If you remember they have like oodles of lenses in their eyes and they are affected by the way light is reflected from the water.

This really does work. DH was a nurseryman and put copper mesh in the bottom of pot plants to keep them from growing into the ground. And thin copper sheets put on pot tops will keep off slugs.

I also use the water in a zip loc on the back porch, it does seem to work. And instead of a fly swatter in windows I use a dust buster to suck them up instead of ugly smashed flies.
