It helps if you have your phone registered on the "Do not call" list. However this does not totally eliminate calls, just thins them out some. Lol!
The worst ones are the auto dialer ones that used to call us on all 4 lines where I used to work. And of course you have to answer a business phone. We learned eventually that many of them had a message at the end of the spiel that if you press 2 (or whatever) they would remove your # from their list.

I also look at the caller ID & don't answer if I don't know it. If I'm filling fiesty I answer that we are a cat rescue, we do have seven & find homes for the ones that get dumped out so I am not lying, & 100% non-profit do they want to donate. I can talk as fast as they can. They usually hang up. I know that people need a job, but really they drive me crazy. As for the "Do Not Call List" it doesn't seem to work. I think they give out numbers. LOL. We have had a scam in our area that people call & tell you that your comp. has a virus they can fix. You just need to give them your info & let them into your comp. If they would call I would ask them if it's contagous & do I need to go to the doctor. LOL.

We have the "Zapper" on our line (I hate to think how long ago we bought it) and it gets rid of most of our nuisence calls. The few we get I hang up on -- and we are on the "do not call list". I inform any charities that if they want my money they can send me the information in the mail (and if they ask for the address, I tell them they should have it since they have the phone number). I never give out my cc# to a random charity.

My DH and I do the same as many of you....If we don't recognized the number, we don't answer. If it's truly legit, they will leave a message requesting us to call back. Lots of the calls are 800 numbers and I suspect they are computer dialed, because if I do pick up on occasion, there is dead space on the line. I don't wait for recordings to kick in...I hang up.
