My oldest DD is turning 40 and I need some gift ideas. Nice or funny gifts.
Her husband always gets her jewelry and nightgowns, she works full time and has 2 elementary school age kids and a 4 month old, so she doesn't have time to sit and read a book.
I really don't like giving appliances (toasters, irons etc) as gifts. I'd rather give her something she wants but doesnt' need....spa gift certificate, etc.
Do any of you have ideas?
Or what did you get when you turned 40 that you really liked?

I remember having a baby when I was 40. My favorite gift to get would be a day together. Lunch, pedicures, shopping for fabric &/or clothing. My husbands favorite gift from his children was a piggy bank and 40 quarters to put in it. You could also pay for a sewing class or other craft making activity. A gift certificate for a new set of family photos taken at different locations. Or - have a Mary Kay party and give her $100 to spend on new stuff.

Oh I forgot. Go to Build-a-Bear and each of you make one with all the clothes and trappings. This gets my vote. I need to send a hint to my kids. I will be 55. If you add the numbers together it makes 10 - Build-a-Bear is what I want this year.

I say take her away on a trip for a weekend away from everything. On my 40th me a few family members and friends went on this wagon ride up in the mountains had Indians raid the wagons (which was more funny than anything) then we got to the top of the mountain there was a Dutch oven dinner and a comedian who was a mountain man I laughed so hard. It was the best birthday ever.

If I got them a night out coupon they wouldn't be able to use it till Oct.!!! My SIL is one of the asst. mgrs of an amusement park and he's never home except to sleep all summer.

Don't get her "over the hill" stuff. Turning 40 was kind of hard for me and I don't think I would've liked all the "old" jokes.
A spa certificate is a great idea. Massage, manicure, pedicure. Depending on your circumstances maybe you could get her a nice day at a spa and then keep the kids so she and the Mr. can go out for a nice dinner.
