Yes, mine end up with 4 layers...opend out "flat" it is 2 layers...pick heavy washcloths...rather than the light weight ones...but even with 2 layers...I can pick up a hot cast iron skillet...or the dutch oven...

Would love to make some if anyone can find a good pattern, I just cannot visualize how it's made. My pot ho;ders are very, very sad and desperately need to be replaced. I really don't like the store bought ones!!

Can you envision hers picked up at the intersection of the 4 corners and then folded flat? It gives 4 "leaves" that then will give the 4 layers. Nice thing about this method is that when one side gets dirty, just flip to a clean side! The post from flicker shows how it looks when folded into 4 layers but is not crocheted around as what I make.
I just went out in the kitchen and looked at the "one" (really, only one, ha!) that I made years ago, and when it's folded square so it's double (meaning 4 layers), it is more than enough to protect the hands. As I recall, the lady who told me how to make mine said that folded out flat, with the four corners, or leaves, it would make a nice-size hot pad. That being said, I'm so glad that this thread was posted, because I was just thinking recently that I would like to make some more, they are sturdy and I use mine all the time. I did use a good weight washcloth to begin with.

When making conventional potholders, I use two layers of ordinary, cheap cotton bath towel for the "stuffing" and cover with a sturdy cotton (striped mattress ticking is the "classic" material). I make them larger than your typical PH so they wrap around the bottom of the hot dish you're moving with ample room for large hands (or sloppy alignment). It insulates beautifully. As long as the PH is dry, you could stand there holding a piping hot dish until it cools off. The toweling is woven, so it doesn't shift or lump after washing. Two layers of cheapo toweling are thin enough to quilt; if you use good, plush towel, one layer would be enough.

Thanks for posting the directions! Here are some pics of the well-loved potholder that my friend's GM had made. She held up two sides, one side, and laid it flat. The last pic is of the crocheted edge. Thanks again for the links.
