Llamas or alpacas?

2 Attachment(s)
Can anyone tell me whether these are llamas or alpacas? Not that I would know the difference at all... useful hair, long necks, that's the limit of my knowledge, I'm sorry to say!

I think they are llamas. I googled both and in the google picture they look like llamas. I live near a "small ranching" area, with all kinds of critters. (One guy walks his pet camel around town.) I have seen them in the yards, big and small, and just took it for granted they were llamas. Now I will have to pay closer attention. Thank you for asking as I have learned something new today.

I'm thinking llama, too. I'm also wondering just what a quilt with this would look like............????

I could be mistaken, but I think there is some of each in there. The only way I know how to tell the difference is the shape of the ears ... Llama's have ears that curve in toward each other at the tip, Alpaca ears are straight, they don't curve.

The top pic looks like all Llama's ... the bottom photo is a little harder to tell because a lot of them have their ears relaxed (not up/alert) and it's harder to see the curve when they're relaxed.

There are also coat differences ... and again ... I think I see some of both in the bottom photo.

Top photo is llama's. Bottom photo is alpacas. Alpacas are much smaller than llamas. I have an aunt and uncle who raise alpacas.

I looked it up. There are both in these pictures. Llamas are twice as large and full bodied, course outer hair over a very fine under coat. Alpacas are the smaller and slimmer of the two and have fine silky hair. Both are herd animals and like to be with others. Both are gentle and can be tamed easily with the right handling.
