There is finally light at the end of the tunnel after all the back and forth about buying a retirement home! I wish I could move there now but it would be way too far for me to commute to work. One more reason to look forward to retirement... a bedroom downstairs with hardwood floors for a sewing room!

sharon b 12-16-2010 11:00 AM

You got the house ?
CONGRATS !!!!!!
How long til retirement ????

pstoner 12-16-2010 11:03 AM

First thing to do..change ALL the locks, and have a security firm that you trust come in and advise you on what to do that won't cost an arm and a leg. Then have another one from further away if you know any and have him give you ideas. This was suggested to one of my family by another family member who was a cop.
But change ALL the locks between each renter, always.

Murphy 12-16-2010 11:17 AM

Yippee. Beautiful things should come out of this magical place. Pics, pics, pics. Congratulations.

AlwaysQuilting 12-16-2010 11:34 AM

mytwopals 12-16-2010 11:36 AM

Congratulations, Pam. It looks like you found yourself a very nice retirement house.

pittsburgpam 12-16-2010 11:39 AM

Retirement is in 8 more years if I take it early at age 55. I work in the mortgage industry and at the same company for 17 years. They've had several rounds of layoffs and I decided to do this now... just in case. House prices are low and the payments are only $469 + taxes & insurance. I couldn't even rent a small apartment for that! Even in the less expensive area this house is in. Since it is considered an investment, my lender required an appraisal that included an income analysis. The rent is estimated to be $1100 per month.

I'm pretty sure that even if I had to retire right now, or lost my job, that I could afford this house on my current pension amount that I've accumulated. In 8 more years I'm certain of it.

amandasgramma 12-16-2010 11:40 AM

beautiful!!!! And good move for planning for retirement!!!

Momof3Es 12-16-2010 11:42 AM

That looks like a great house! You could use it as a summer house for now until you retire!!

raptureready 12-16-2010 11:44 AM

That's so cool! Since I worked for the U of I, I was able to retire with 30 years in at the ripe old age of 51. I retired the year my dd started first grade.

pocoellie 12-16-2010 11:53 AM

Congratulations!!!

pittsburgpam 12-16-2010 12:05 PM

MAN!!! Retiring when your DD was so young must have been wonderful!! I will have 25 years in at the age of 55.

quiltstodo 12-16-2010 12:08 PM

Beautiful Home. Where in California were you able to find those prices? We've had to look in Texas to get those kind of prices. Congrats on a great deal.

CarrieAnne 12-16-2010 01:48 PM

amma 12-16-2010 02:11 PM

What a sweet house. Congratulations.

pittsburgpam 12-16-2010 05:11 PM

It's in Stockton near UOP. It was a great price at $115k. It wasn't usual to find a house in such good shape for the price but they kept lowering it. I was lucky to get it. My agent told me today, "You know how many people ask me about this house?" and another of her clients really wants it, says to contact him if my deal doesn't go through.

The neighborhood is very quaint and old fashioned, the houses look like little gingerbread houses and cottages, huge old trees overhanging the streets.

Shemjo 12-16-2010 05:15 PM

Congratulations!

quiltstodo 12-16-2010 06:50 PM

Looks beautiful. You are smart to plan ahead. Lord only knows what the future will bring. Good luck!

Ramona Byrd 12-16-2010 09:05 PM

Congratulations. This is a good time to buy houses, they are so low priced now it's almost unbelievable. Smart of you to look ahead, lots and lots of people don't and regret it.
I wish you were my neighbor.

Candace 12-16-2010 09:07 PM

You'll be very close to me! I'm North of Stockton in Elk Grove;> We'll have to play together.

pittsburgpam 12-16-2010 09:10 PM

Merced isn't far from Stockton or Elk Grove! My close co-worker lives in Elk Grove but he works at our office near Sacramento. I work in the East Bay.

Candace 12-16-2010 09:36 PM

I also have carpeting in my sewing studio. However, I did what Alex Anderson recommended years ago--I have industrial type, non-looped carpeting. It is wonderful, and I'm so glad I placed it here. Also, have in-floor heat as my studio is in the lower level of our house. I'm always warm and toasty--important when one lives in Minnesota!

dphelps 12-17-2010 09:09 AM

Congratulations and so happy for you. That is a smart investment. Cute house.

rusty quilter 12-17-2010 10:50 AM
