The most wonderful thing I remember is my Mama making banana pudding (especially if the bananas were almost too ripe). She did that cooking thing with some of this and some of that. We asked her time and again to write down her recipe and finally my younger sister got it written down. But no matter how hard we try, we cannot duplicate that banana pudding. She also cooked it in the same pot everytime so that might have something to do with it. Oh boy, I loved it served warm and we always requested it at least once a week!!

I had the butter/ice cream thing happen to me too. Not fun, especially when everyone is sitting there laughing at you, except momma who was yelling at daddy.
I seemed to have a problem with crab imperial. One restaurant, the longer I ate the hotter it got. Daddy finally tasted it and it had cayenne pepper on top instead of paprika. Got a new one. Another restaurant left it in the oven too long and had to make a new one.
I think the best was my momma's chicken pies. She made them in the pie pan with all the vegies. We found one in the freezer after she died. Who got it? No one could eat it for a while. My SIL makes them for me now since I'm the only one who eats them.
My grandmom made wonderful applesauce cookies she adapted from an applesauce cake recipe.
I remember coming home from school and find momma at the kitchen table patting up brains to fry. Yuk! Didn't have to eat that or cabbage or stewed tomatoes.

I lovvvve watermelon!! and once took the whole thing and hid in the back of my Dads flat bed truck, Ate it All!!! I was about 7yrs. Boy was it Good!LOL

My mother's chicken and dressing was the best in the world. When we'd have family get-togethers, my cousins would often ask her to bring that. I make mine like hers, but have only been able to get it to taste like hers a couple of times.

I also loved my great-aunt's homemade-from-scratch lemon meringue pie, and another aunt made yummy homemade caramel pies.

Wahhhhh! Now I'm feeling nostalgic and wish we could go back to those good old days for those wonderful foods!

Graham crackers with frosting. Whenever my mother made a cake she took the left over frosting and put it between two graham crackers. My sister and I loved the crackers better than the cake.

I fondly remember a meal we had on the first vacation my family took to the Smokey Mountains. There were 6 of us kids.... we were not rich by any means... but Mom and Dad always took the time to make sure we had fun as a family.

We stayed at the "River Breeze" motel in Pigeon Forge (it is still there!). The ONLY other thing in Pigeon Forge at that time was 'Hillbilly Village' right across the road. --- also still there!

One morning, my dad cooked breakfast at the picnic area behind the motel on the river bank. I remember him washing the skillet in the river!! ;-) Precious, precious times.

My Mother made the best pinto beans with ham you ever tasted. Beans were cheap to buy and the ham was given to us by a neighbor. I always remember her homemade biscuits to go along with it. I've never been able to make my beans taste like hers and I can't make biscuits to save my soul. These were hard times but I remember them vividly. Those days cannot be recaptured but remain in my memory.

Once in a while, my mom used to make pancakes for all 6 of us before school. She had a electric griddle and had to make lots of pancakes in a short time. I didn't know for the longest time - that pancakes are not supposed to be gooey in the middle.


Whenever Dad was responsible for dinner - we got SOS or scrambled eggs and ham.

Just about anything mom cooked especially fried chicken. We lived on a farm also and it was a wonderful childhood, no money but never felt deprived. We grew all our food and the table was always loaded with wonderful things to eat. I remember when we would butcher the beef and dad would fix some beef tenderloin about midnight and it was so good.

My mom would make us Chocolate Gravy - every once in a while for breakfast - it was so good over buscuits - the leftovers she would add rice to it - so it was like rice chocolate pudding. Also, when we had snow - my mom would make snow ice cream - that was a great treat.
