So I really want to use my new found quilting abilities to make Christmas gifts this year, and I figure I should think about getting started soon since the holidays always manage to sneak up on me! I'm just not sure what to make? I would really like to make a table runner and placemats for each of my Grandmothers but one has a custom built table with 8 place settings (its a looooong mission style table that my Grandfather built for her) and also she is REALLY picky and I would hate to make her something she won't use, but she's the kind of woman that has everything!! And my other Grandmother has a round table and is a quilter herself (though not much any more) and would love anything I made for her....any suggestions??

I would think a table runner for the long table and a smallish table topper for the round. If you make them from Xmas fabrics they will be used during the season (who doesn't like the holidays) That way if it is not perfectly to her taste it will still be OK.

A hexagon style topper would look good on the round table. I have a small table, and no matter what, seems like the traditional shaped ones look odd.

Me? I would want to go big and make a quilt. A hundred years ago, when I took a ceramic class, the teacher said to start out making an ashtray. Not, me. I want to start out making a Christmas tree.
Your grandmother may have everything but she doesn't have a quilt made by you. That would be special.

There are so many interesting table runner and topper patterns. I think they would be appreciated. Probably just knowing you made them would make your grandmothers especially happy!
