I like looking out a window. What do you prefer?? Looking out into a family room or out a window??

In my DD's new house, she has a huge island but he sink and dishwasher and rest of the appliances are in the cupboards on 32 sides of the room. She is a quilter too so she had plans of using the island counter top as a place to cut out quilts. It works perfect for that. It also doubles as a kitchen table.

My husband built me a 3x5 foot island after we lived in our house 14 years. It has 3 doors on both sides with shelves. It sees more sewing stuff on it than food. It matches the oak cupboards that were already here. He also built cupboards above the stove and fridge.

I'd suggest putting the sink somewhere other than the island. The sink can take up good space, while the island may well end up being a greatly used multi-purpose space. I love my island! (no sink)

I am with you on the island. They seem to be an obstacle. Perhaps the kitchen layout needs adjustment so that one does not have to run around it.

I vote "no sink" because IF I had an island, I want it for the convenience of buffet dining fir gatherings and cookie bking. Just make sure that the island is located with plenty of space between cabinets etc. I don't want go feel cramped.

I have a large island. I wanted it plain but my builder really encouraged the sink. I am glad. I find I use it a lot. I did it on the far right corner and still have enough space for a quilt...

I guess I should be more specific. I have a " kitchen sink" under the window on the perimeter of kitchen. In my island is a second, single bowl sink. But large enough to soak yardage And it is very convenient for all family gatherings. You know, when kids, grandkids are there. Then everyone can help.

My sink is in the island and I like it that way...what I don't like is , no electrical outlet put on either end of the island. That would have been so handy.

I have a large island in my kitchen, with nothing on it. It has cabinets under that are back to back so I have doors on 2 sides. I also have electric plugs on all 4 sides - one of the best features!! My daughters have islands that have the sinks at one end and seating at the other end. Not so useful and the dirty dishes are always on display.
