I ate some of DD's Birthday cake and now I am broke out in rashes all over. I think it was the red dye in the icing. I know that I can't eat anything with oatmeal, or any kind of fish/sea food, but I didn't know about the red dye. I just took an antihistamine so hopfully the itching will stop soon.

Does anyone else have an allergic (sp) reaction to the red dye they use in icing.

Some red food colorings are made from crutacea. Be rally careful of them. I would avoid all red if I was you.

My son used to have a red dye intolerance. It could be something in the cake too...maybe oat flour? If it gets worse get to the doctor....allergic reactions are nothing to play with. Hope you get better!

Was it a commercially made cake? If not, then you could check the maker and look at some of her ingredients. Commercially made ones can have lots of stuff in them that are not legally required to be put on the label.

Sure hope that you get better soon. Have you tried using a spray bottle and putting a fine mist on your skin?

Oatmeal? That's not such a common allergenic. Look up some of the oat family, you may find that you have eaten some of its relatives. And you may be allergic to one or more of several other foods. I googled this, thought I'd seen it some time ago.
One of my daughters was born allergic to wheat and milk, and those two things were often attached to many, many other foods that did not have them on the labels.

Blessings...

Oats in Frozen Whitecastle Burgers—Any Other Odd Places You Know Of?

I’ve resorted to really only posting to this blog when content comes in from readers, and today is a good example. Reader Shauna wanted to share one of many foods that contains oats that you really wouldn’t expect to:

Sometimes there are oats found in foods you’d never expect. Frozen Whitecastle burgers contain oat fiber. Thankfully I never eat them because of the fat content, so no near fatal reactions, but I thought I would let your readers know.

I get hives from stress, not from food allergies. I think knowing what food to avoid might be easier.

[ I know that I can't eat anything with oatmeal, or any kind of fish/sea food,
-------------------------
I had a friend who worked with me in the hospital, who was very allergic to sea foods. She fixed her own sandwiches and instead of tuna she used chicken breast, ground up. Mayo, lettuce and tomato, on good bread. One day she had such a terrible reaction that she was in ER for hours before being able to go home.
At about that same time, my late DH, a nurseryman, was reading to me some new (1980s) research on how to grow tomatoes in colder weather and with more salt in the dirt. They were trying to put cold weather fish DNA into the tomatoes and growing them near the ocean. I've never heard anything more of that, but it would be relatively easy to get this DNA into the general population of commercial tomatoes. Wind can carry pollen for many miles, as can humans. Even someone liking the looks of a tomato plant can take cuttings and grow them at home, many miles away. And save and share the resulting seeds!! That's why we fear new plants coming into this country, it's way too easy to get what we don't want started. Almost impossible to kill them all after they get started.

I told this to my friend and she reluctantly crossed tomatoes off her diet plan.

I'd suggest you try to find out what was put into this cake, because some of the dyes, Red Dye number 5 is in most of them but some I'm sure is not required to be on the printed list.

The cake came from mijers so I can't check the lable. I'm usually pretty carefull. They sneak oatmeal in everything. Breaded chicken is something I can't eat anymore. It seams the older I get the bigger the reactions. DH suggested I think about getting an allergie test to see what else I'm allergic to.

That's an excellent idea. Blood tests for the oat allergy will tell you a lot. And allergies rarely fade after childhood, perhaps you might ask your doctor about an Epipen to carry with you.

Of course, all the tests won't tell you everything you are or may be allergic to, but in doing it the doctor should give you some ideas on how to look for such things.

I would strongly suggest that you not eat anything prepared, use food that LOOKS like it is supposed to, and not shot from guns or enriched or manipulated or "improved" in any way at all. Nothing that comes in boxes. But be sure to go to your doctor. And let us know what he/she says, it might help others on this quilting site.

I have a severe oatmeal allergy! Doesn't matter whether I eat them or touch them. It has been verified in allergy testing. I also am allergic to shellfish and some preservatives. We won't even go into medications!
