hi from Mass
hello all, my names Heather as strange as this is to say I am a third generation quilter but have no idea how to do it, you see my entire childhood my mom sewed blankets, clothes, Christmas ornaments, one year a whole line of Barbie clothes for me lol. when my daughter was born she started to show me different stitches and how to use her machine , that was 18 years ago sadly my mother was diagnosed with cancer on my daughters first birthday and passed away by her 3rd. A month ago i was invited to a aunts house and she showed me all the beautiful quilts my grandmother made before she passed away and all of the memories of the sewing my mom did with me came flooding back. I have not been able to think of anything else since. I very much want to learn how to quilt and get into the art but i'm not to sure where to start. my daughter bought me a sewing machine for christmas. i'm so excited but i guess i need some advice on where to start. thanks

There are lots of great videos on line. I think that a good place to start is with an Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day Book. Her books are very well written and easy to understand. Look at the pictures here on the Quilting Board to see what you like color wise and pattern wise. And ask lots of questions. Everyone here is very helpful!!!
Enjoy your quilting journey!

Welcome from Quebec city, Canada
If you have a chance to find a place in your area where you can take quilting lessons it would boost your confidence to be around others who are learning at the same time than you are.
That's how I started anyway. it was for small projects, not for a big quilt. I started with placemats, pot holder and I now have made 3 quilts. Of course, I had one book and read it over and over and over and still go back to it for reference because I think when we want to learn, there is always something new to be learned about quilting
Have fun in your new quilting journey and come back here anytime. You will find a lot of people who will help you in every step!
Go gradually and small
