    Welcome, James.

I show vintage cars and we have a saying "If you don't drive it, it's just a float". I feel the same about sewing machines. If you don't use them, they are just a piece of art. And probably a piece of art that will deteriorate with time. Anything mechanical should be used to keep it running.

(Which reminds me, my grandmother's treadle machine is still waiting for me to use it . . . )

I couldn't agree more. Even if it's a rare antique, make a potholder or something. The old Singers were made by the millions and it's nearly impossible to wear them out. They're great for all aspects of machine quiltmaking. I just found a darning foot for my 31-15 (a light industrial Singer, often referred to as "the tailor's machine." I look forward to enjoying its roominess to do free motion work.

Now plunk yourself down in front of granny's treadle and get going. Singing (it doesn't matter how good you are) helps you get the rhythm!
