1st need to select the pattern and fabric colors. Might need to ask help from the fabric shop staff.
I work with 2 1/2 strips of fabric, & patterns to match.. Maybe, a book to teach you along. Lots of you tubes.
Any guild in your area? Allow yourself plenty of time to learn, don't get discouraged.. If your finances allow, a workshop or class from your local quilt/fabric shop. Here in Manitoba our municipal gov't offer recreational classes
    on sewing/quilting.

Welcome from Manitoba-Canada, much information on youtube is out there to help you learn which wasn't when I 1st started. Missouri quilts company, fat quarter shop.. As for backing can be made a number of ways.. Batting can be made of polar fleece, polyester batting, wool, cotton batting, or even bubble fabric. Some have made rag quilts to start and used 2-3layers of poor quality flannel.. Many options.
