quilting with decorative stitches and not using a walking foot

hi there, i'm a new quilter. i've made a few small ones and am about to quilt my first large one (queen sized). I have sewn all the squares together, pinned the batting to the front, and am ready to machine quilt (on a Brother Innov-is 40). The machine has a very cool decorative stitch, but the manual specifically says you cannot use the walking foot on that stitch (i think because there is some reverse action). will this be a disaster or if i'm careful, can i manage without the walking foot (if it's well pinned)?

David, I think it depends on the thickness of your quilt "sandwich". Why don't you make up a sample that is approximately the same thickness of your quilt and experiment on iwithout the foot and mastering the decorative stitch.. On thinner quilts I have quilted withour the walking foot, but the foot does help move all three layers better.
Don't try using the walking foot with the decorative stitch because the needle may hit the foot and break possibly causing you or your machine damage.

Ummm, I may be stating the obvious here, but do you have backing on your quilt? I thought I read ... "batting pinned to the front". If there isn't a back, I'm pretty sure the batting is not going to get along with your feed dogs.
As for the quilting, I did my first few without a walking foot. It's easier with it, but doable without.
