When doing free motion quilting you don't use a walking foot, either, so I don't see how this would be different. I use a Pfaff and the instructions say to disengage the IDT, (which acts as the walking foot for a Pfaff), for free motion. (I hope this makes sense:) )

I'm no expert but I say don't use walking foot with embroidery/fancy stitches. The walking foot pulls the material forward and your emb/fancy stitch may not call for that. I can reverse with my walking foot but some others here say they can't. The walking foot is primarily for keeping two layers (or three) together for straight stitch quilting/piecing so that one doesn't end up shorter than the other.

I agree with what has been said. Some walking feet cannot do reverse, some are too narrow for decorative stitches.
If your manual says not to use it and you do, it could mean a costly repair to your machine or replacing the walking foot.
