I don't make fancy dog quilts. 2-3 pieces of fabric together and that's it. I do 1/2 in seam allowances and I zig and zag. Goes for anything pet bed oriented. Anything else is 1/4".

I have a friend who makes quilted table cloths. She sews then serges the seams so they can handle the extra washing and drying a table cloth gets. That may help with your quilts as well as the larger seam allowance.

What stitch length are you using for piecing? If your stitch length is 2mm (12 stitches/in), you might try shortening it to somewhere between 1.5-1.75mm. It will slightly thicken the seam at the stitching line, but will make it a bit harder for the doggies to get their pointy little nails into the seam.
