Im always looking for better ways to mark a quilt.
So far my favorite is dissapearing ink pens but of course you have to quilt right away cause after a day the marks are gone.
I also use the purple wash out pens and so far no problems.
Just marked a border with a plain old pencil to see how that works.

Pencil works real well. I hand quilt and just mark light enough to see and by the time my hand slides alll over the quilt for the time i am working on it, the pencil has rubbed off!!
