? about a Necchi Sew and Serge machine
#11
My last machine was a Necchi. My mom had it for almost 15 years before giving it to me and I used it for several years. It was fairly plain with only 10 stitch functions but it worked great for her. I made two quilts and several smaller crafts. She sewed tons of kids clothes and doll outfits.
I liked that it was very heavy (mostly metal) and didn't rock. It kept consistent stitches.
I didn't like that my model had a top drop bobbin and I could never get the tension right without a thousand adjustments. I love the new machines that do it automatically.
Overall, though, I have only positive feelings about Necchi. My problems with the machine were do to a goofy user, not the machine. :-)

I have a Necchi machine that I bought in 1963 and it's still going strong. It has been shipped all over the world and fell from the crate at one point and we still could have it repaired. I keep thinking that I would love to get a new machine with all the new decorative stitches, BUT----this machine has been thru every move and all the kids and it is a work horse. I have sewed leather with it and jeans, just used the proper needles and it was great. In 1963 it cost $350 and has decorative stitches and 1/4th seam measurement with the pressure foot. I can't justify getting rid of it, so I just keep sewing!!!!!!!!!!

I just want to mention that there can be a huge difference in quality between new Necchi machines and vintage Necchi machines. The vintage machines were made in Italy, were far ahead of their time, and were workhorses. I don't know where the new Necchis are made but, even if it's Italy, I would wonder about the manufacturing quality. I found 13 reviews of Necchi sewing machines at http://www.patternreview.com but in running through them it seems as if they are all for vintage machines. That tells me that the Necchi brand probably doesn't sell well anymore in the U.S., possibly for good reason?
