I stacked four poly high loft batts for my son's comforter. I did quilt it, but I'm not sure which machine I used. Probably not the Elna, so it would have been the Kenmore, which is a high shank machine. Would I do it again? No, but I'd use two.

My guess is that the piecing seams in quilt tops give them more weight and make them less likely to be as fluffy as a comforter. I haven't had a comforter since the 90s because of allergies, but the ones we had were made of wide yardage, and the only seams were the quilting. And not tons of those, either, for maxmum puff.

I have a hand stitched quilt I made some years ago and that is quite soft. It's the quilt my Grandchildren like when they stay over cause it is so soft and cuddly.

A biscuit quilt would work if you want a lighter quilt.

That's my sweet little Miller boy. He passed in Dec 2014. He was the sweetest dog ever. I miss him.

I should add that this duvet cover is heavier than one with one piece of fabric for the top. At first, it bothered me because it was different, but after a couple weeks I decided it was fine. Now I'm so used to it that one night when I washed it after work and it didn't get dry, the comforter by itself felt way too light!
