Here are the backs of 2 rag quilts I made, I just went with whatever looked appealing to me. That's part of the fun, imho, to make them unique on both sides.

this one's all cotton front and back

I do like bj does because I don't like the same fabrics next to each other in a random scrap quilt. That said, EVERY quilt I ever did that way ended up having same fabrics touching. When I first saw it, bad words came out of my mouth. When the quilt was done, I was sometimes hard-pressed to pick out those places. My advice: relax and do what makes you happy. If same/same is no issue for you, then go with the flow. It will be much faster if you don't sort.

Another suggestion is to sort the stacks of fabric by color/value. When you sew the row, pick from a stack that is NOT like the one you just did. It takes a bit more prep work too - but it all depends on what YOU want.
