I made 2 different quilts for my soldier son. He LOVED the John Deere one, and took it to both Iraq, AND Afghanistan!

Once the soldier arrives at his assigned base, his living quarters is just like a dorm room (at least that's what it's like for our son). He can have any kind of bedding he likes and I'm sure a quilt will be much appreciated.

At AIT (Additional Individual Training) which usually follows Basic Training, they have the same barracks restrictions they have at Basic Training. When permanent assignment is made restricts vary.

After he completes basic training he will be able to have his civies back, but can only wear them on weekends. He won't be able to have a quilt on his bunk in the barracks. Keep it for him until he gets assigned to a permanent unit and even then if he is living on base he might not have room to keep it.

My son has been in the Air Force for two years. When they are in basic training they should get nothing from home but letters in plain white envelopes and maybe pictures depending on the branch. Care packages would get them in trouble. After basic, is tech school, and then again it depends on the branch. My son was able to get things from home, but remember they won't be there long, so anything has to be packed to the next place or home. Again each branch is different, my son was able to have care packages, but I had a cousin in the army and their tech school was very strict on what they received from home. My advice is to wait until they get their orders to be stationed at a long term location, and then send things like quilts. My son has two of his quilts from home.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. His mom and I are both on facebook so I will depend on that for updates as to how he's doing and just resolve to write a couple letters to him while he's in Basic. If he makes it through I can find out from his mom where he's bound from there and what the regulations are.

Great job and cause for our servicemembers overseas. A splash of color was wonderful for those so far from home.

My son is in the USAF, and though he has never been deployed (thank God!), he has been away from home in other states (Alaska, Florida) for 5 years. I made him a quilt right after basic, and it has hugged him when I am too far away! Now it also hugs my 2 sweet grand daughters!!
