I use a 14 needle for everything. Topstitch for quilting and microtex sharp for piecing. No problems with any threads shredding or breaking. I did have problems with connecting threads thread shredding with #12 needles.

It's not just you. It breaks for me quite frequently. Lots of starts and stops. I found that I needed to slow down, and I can always tell when I need a new needle because it breaks even more often. I just ordered some Glide thread for my next few projects, so I'm hoping that is better.
