Default Aurifil Thread

Hi...I know everyone raves about it but I find it breaks easily when machine quilting....is it just me? I am not an expert at machine quilting but just wondering if anyone else experienced this. I don't think it is the tension.

What thread do you use?

Thank you!

I don't have that problem, but I will say this, not every thread is perfect for every person in every machine.

some threads that I loathe, others love ... and visa versa.

In the event though that it is something that can be corrected, check your needle size to make sure you are using the correct needle. Make sure it is a new needle. Adjust your tension. Last, try slowing down especially on curves (if that is where it is breaking). 99% of the time I have thread breakage issues I can chalk it up to speed (specifically the speed that the quilt is being move, or the speed the machine is being moved if it is a long arm ... the movement of the quilt/machine is too fast for the speed the machine is running).

I had the impression Aurifil was better for piecing than for machine quilting, being only a 2-ply thread.

How old is your thread? It might not have been stored properly. I usually buy mine online from them. I bought some from an individual that had a quilt shop years ago and it was in bad condition and broke when I tugged on it. I sent it back to her.

It is also great for quilting, Viking recommends it for the mega quilter. If you pull too hard on the fabric while FMQ you could be causing it to break. Also, make sure your pressure foot is up when threading your machine to get the best tension. Before starting to quilt, pull gently on your thread to see if it comes thru the needle without having to pull. It could also be the needle too. I love this thread for everything. I've even used it in my machine emb without any trouble

If you test how easily it breaks, manually, compared to another cotton 50 wt, you will see a difference. I use it for satin stitching (it's similar to a 60/2 embroidery thread) and to run stay stitches in seam allowances to check fraying (a row of Aurifil is way more subtle). But as long as I can snap it easily(and no, it's not old), I'll stick with what Harriet Hargrave recommends and not use it for piecing or for quilting that isn't very dense.

hugs,
Charlotte, who will undoubtedly need a flame-proof suit

aurifil thread is what I usually use and the only problem that I had was with a variegated thread bought locally and it just kept breaking. Contacted the company and they replaced it and the thread I got a replacement was fine.

It's not just you. It breaks for me quite frequently. Lots of starts and stops. I found that I needed to slow down, and I can always tell when I need a new needle because it breaks even more often. I just ordered some Glide thread for my next few projects, so I'm hoping that is better.

No, it's not just you. I've had the same problem with it. I thought maybe my thread was old, but, if it is, apparently all my cotton thread is old and not usable. I refuse to accept that! I fixed my problem by changing to a 90 needle (I usually prefer a smaller one) and going real slow with my quilting. Also lowered the top tension. The quilt shop told me to put the thread in the freezer to rejuvenate it, but I haven't tried that yet.

Not just you. I had the same problem, was not impressed, only cotton thread I have used that didn't break was superiors king tut and for FMQ cotton I will not be using any other brand as it is superior as in its name. Also consider poly. It hardly ever breaks the way cotton does.
