Sure I piece backings frequently. I always cut off the selvage edges. There are pictures all over the web on pieced backings.

Why not? If you need something wider, you can piece the backing. Sometimes the backing takes on a life of its own and becomes another top. http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...in-t23612.html

I always use 44/45" fabric for backing. I do cut off the selvages and sew with 1/2 inch seams. I would like to use wider fabric for backing; but so far, the fabrics that look best for my backings are 44/45".

Dunster, your avatar turned out better than mine did. As for backing, use the 44/45 fabric. Be sure to always trim off your selvages in the middle, press it well. When planning the measurement for your quilt top, if you can, make the seam go side to side instead of from top to bottom. When your longarmer ( from experience) will appreciate you a little more. The center seam can cause issues on rolling the quilt on the bars. There is such a versatility in your 44/45 fabrics and as said above, it works great.

I love, love, love a pieced backing! It is just another element to the quilt!

of course its ok to use 44-45 inch fabric for backing! but if you are working on a king size, remember, you have to have 3 or 4 rows..to get the length.
piece of cake!!

I use 44/45 inch backing all the time. I don't even cut the selvages off....don't tell.
