I was thinking of buying this for DGD. She will be five in Feb. and always wants to help me sew. I assume you can actually sew with them, hopefully slowly, and there is a finger guard. But batteries I don't know, she's not here that often. Any input would be appreciated, Thanks

I bought my DGD one several years ago, it was electric, we could never keep the bobbin in and the thread was always breaking, we adjusted and read and re-read the manual, but could never get it to run right. I wish I had invested in a regular machine for her.

Most toy machines are frustrating to operate.

Janome puts out a really cute little machine that actually works and doesn't cost more than the toys. I bought this one for my granddaughter and she loves it. http://www.overstock.com/Crafts-Sewi...7/product.html

Janome has another version in a Hello Kitty theme that's about $100. Overstock.com has them here: http://www.overstock.com/Crafts-Sewi...0/product.html

Be sure not to get the chainstitch version. :)

You can buy finger guards that fit any low shank machine. sew-classic.com has them: http://shop.sew-classic.com/Finger-N...nes-SCF020.htm

I wouldn't; the toy ones never work and are frustrating. I'd get her a Hello Kitty sewing machine and show her how to use it properly.
