I'm piecing together a tablecloth top......should I use batting, if so, (I prefer W&N) which batting would you suggest? The table is fairly big, and I don't want it too heavy, it's a gift for an older person.
Suggestions?

I would use a batting as it helps to "even out" the ridges of the seams. Warm and white does not drape as well as other battings. I would use Cream White ( that is the name) as its thin and has wonderful drape. Some use flannel , but I find it to be just a bit thinner than I prefer.

I would preshrink the flannel.. as some really shrink a lot!

If you use flannel, definitely preshrink as Lori says, because not only does it shrink but it shrinks unevenly in length and width. In fact if you want a very thin tablecloth, you could just use flannel as the backing and no batting. It just depends on how thin you want it to be. You might experiment with a few smaller pieces to decide what fabrics/battings to use.

I use flannel quite often (especially in baby quilts). You can quilt it far apart because it is a weave, and the drape is lovely - perfect for a table cloth. Washes well and holds its shape.

And yes ... definitely pre-shrink it. I wash it twice in HOT water.

Preshrink some flannel--I would use white or ecru--and use that. It works great on table runners and I'm guessing it will be great on a tablecloth. I used batting in a tablecloth and would not do that again. froggyinexas
