Thermore Ultra Thin 100% polyester is good if you want a flatter look.

I've used many low loft cotton and blends (mostly left over from quilts) but also like the Thermore Ultra-thin poly as well - also great for coasters & mug-rugs.

I use leftover Warm & Natural batting, too, along with old blue jean scraps for the backs. Makes them sturdy and very washable.

Bosall. It comes preformed or you can buy it on a roll if you're lucky. Personally, I like the preformed as half the work is done. Doesn't shrink, lays flat, has a nice feel.

I have a pattern that recommends using flannel for batting in placemats. Go to a thrift store and see if you can find what I call a sheet blanket. It's a bit thicker than flannel on a bolt and you will have more than plenty for use. Stains won't be of any concern and it probably has been washed multiple times so won't shrink.

I use Warm n Natural and don't pre-shrink. I've never had a problem with things tipping over etc.

I use flannel that I get on sale at Walmart or Joanns. I try to get a light color so the print doesn't show through. Sometimes I'll use a double layer and put right sides together because of the print. Be sure to wash and pre-shrink flannel.

Like Nan, I use whatever batting I have that is the size I need. Don't like to cut into a queen size piece of batting to make four or six place mats.

I also use Pellon fusible fleece for placemats. It's so nice when they come out of the dryer flat!!!!!!!!!!!! A lady who works in a local quilt shop recommended it to me and I was skeptical. Now I use nothing but the Pellon for my placemats.
