My dh wants his quilt to be thick like his grandmother used to make. Now we are actually from the north and she lived in canada. Unfortunatly she is no longer with us and I have never met her. I am not sure what he is talking about except that it is sounds like a comforter with the poly batting to me. He says that she used to hand quilt. Is there thick cotton? He keeps showing me like it looks like almost 1" or 2" thick.

It is possible to hand quilt high loft poly, your stitches may not be as small, I would guess that she used poly.

wool batts have nice loft-not an inch but they are soft and fluffy- some of the (big-award winning quilters) use double batts in their quilts to give the quilting more depth/definition. some combine cotton and wool for that purpose. one of the ladies i quilt for always brings in the (loftiest) poly batting i've ever seen-it has to be over 1/2" an inch thick...don't think it's a whole inch but it is very lofty...it is difficult to hand quilt with a lofty batting-- unless doing 'big=stitch' quilting

I don't know how to hand quilt so I guess that would be good. Just not sure yet how lofty I am going to do it. Poly or cotton, double or single bat.

quilterj is there a possibility that one of your DH's relatives has one of his Gma's quilts that you could look at and feel? Sometimes I can tell by having an up close and personnal contact experience with items that are described to me. Good luck at "duplicating" the quilt of his childhood-------it's a big task------but the rewards will be never ending :-)

Quilter's Dream makes a "supreme" cotton batting which is the highest cotton loft available I believe...it is fabulous. There is no scrim, glue or binders in their batts. They actually have 3 different choices of loft with their cotton batting. They also make poly batts with several choices in that area.
