? about spray basting stuff...

I am getting started on machine quilting and am wondering if anyone has used just a regular spray adhesive from the craft store? Not one intended for quilting? I have some and want to try it but I also don't want my hard work to melt away into a pile of goo. THanks for sharing your experiences!

I haven't tried it, and you put sooooo much work into a quilt you really want to make sure it's not going to cause problems. I woud call the company if there is a 1-800 number, here's some things to consider.
1. Is it washable.
2. Can a sewing needle go through it without being gunked up!
3. Is it safe to use on fabrics, or will it discolor the fabric in time.
You could make a sample piece try sewing through it, and try washing it, but if it were me, I'd go buy some spray adhesive just for quilting!

you need to make yourself a small sandwich (like maybe 6" square, top, batt, back...use your spray adhesive and try it out...there are literally hundreds of them on the market...so no one can tell you your's is ok to use, only you can determine that. problems that may arise? gumming up your needle, will have to clean the needle, or change the needle frequently; may stain the fabrics, may make your (quilt) as stiff as a board, may not wash out. so if you want to see if it will work make a little practice piece, spray it, quilt it, wash it, see what happens.

After I get to the point of sewing the three layers together, I use 505. It seems expensive, but you know, it works like a charm. Who needs aggravation at that point, I have done what I could in piecing it, that to try and save money at this point is kind of self defeating. And maybe asking for a problem. Now, on the other hand if there is a product out there you can use and it does not cause trouble, well I am all for that. Interested in what others have to say.

I had a can of spray adhesive and tried it on fabric. What a mess!! I had bleeding fabric, gummed up needles, lots of frustration. I was glad that it was just a practice potholder that I experimented with LOL
Even though they are cheaper, I would stick with the temporary spray adhesives meant for basting quilts :D:D:D
