I'm about to put my first quilt on my quilt frame to hand quilt. Do you sew the binding to the front of the quilt before you quilt it? I read somewhere that one lady did to keep the quilt more square.

I ALWAYS quilt first, then square it, and bind last. That way you can bring the quilting right to the edge and secure threads under the binding. Quilting may also 'change' the dimensions of the final product,so you have a last chance to square it up before adding your final 'frame'. Have fun!

I normally quilt first and then attach binding. My quilting goes 'off the edge'. I do know a couple of quilters who regularly bind first and then quilt. They have excellent quilts, but use fairly thin batting. One said that she doesn't heavily quilt, so the takeup is pretty minimal. So,if you feel like 'breaking the rules' now and then, give yourself permission.
