I'm stumped and need help. I've been quilting for several years and have always used a block/square binding around my quilts because I like a 1 to 2 inch wide binding.

I would love to make a mitered binding 1 to 2 inches wide. Unfortunately when I follow any directions for mitered binding, they all require that the batting and backing be trimmed to 1/4 inch, and the binding wraps around to the back just fine, and the corners are mitered.

However, if I trim the batting and backing to 1 inch, the corners will not miter. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fold the fabric to accomodate a 1 inch binding and still achieve a mitered corner?

I entered a quilt in compitition last year (for the very first time) that I'd spent over 100 meticulous hours creating (all applique). It didn't even receive an honorable mention; but did receive a judge's comment that the binding should have been mitered. Needless to say I was a bit miffed. (Kitty City quilt picture attached - I hope).

I don't miter my binding, but I also never plan to enter one in competition. I'm so help, sorry.....I do love your quilt:)

ive always done a wider binding --try a wider seam like 1/2 inch instead of 1/4-----i just love your quilt you do not need ribbons put up a photo we will give heaps of positive feedback

If you want 1" of your binding to show, stitch 1" from the edge, or trim your quilt 3/4" from the edge and stitch 1/4" on your quilt top. When you get to the corner, stop 1" from the end, turn the quilt, fold the binding back to the new top edge, then straight back down. That should give you that sharp corner that you're looking for.

This is the same method that we normally use for bindings when we take a 1/4" seam, stop 1/4" from the end, etc. Send me a PM if I need to take some pictures tomorrow when I'm in the studio.

You got my vote! Cute. Judges, go figure, some like chocolate cake some do not. Some like mitered corners some do not. You got a winner on THIS board!

I always miter my bindings. Not sure I would win a prize, but I think they are nice looking. Good luck.

Go to about 20:30 for binding. You can use this technique with any size binding.
