Please help. I am attempting to stitch in the ditch on a table topper and my thread keeps breaking. I am using machine quilting thread. It was fine when I top stitched around the stars. Is it the tension or what? I have rethreaded 3 times already.
I am pretty new to quilting and can use all the help I can get. :)

Change needle, clean under the bobbin area, take out and put the bobbin back in, try a different bobbin...make sure the thread isn't catching on the edge of the spool up top or on anything else.

The eye of the needle might not be big enough for the thread you're using.
Try a topstitching (also known as a "Metallic" ) needle, or if you don't have a topstitching needle around, try the next size bigger of a regular sharp. If that helps but doesn't eliminate the problem, use one size again bigger.
Your tension might also be a bit tight. Loosen the upper tension on the thread a little at a time until either the problem goes away or until you start seeing gobs of loose thread on the back of your practice piece.
