Double needles sew 2 lines of straight stitches on top...underneath the stitch looks similar to a zig zag because there is only one bobbin thread to lock the two top threads together. It is used mostly for top stitching hems for a finished look where the back side doesn't show. I would remove the needle plate, install a double needle, and turn the wheel by hand to be sure the needles pick up the bobbin thread. Then make a decision re the new needle plate.

Just as many zig-zag machines offer straight-stitch needle plates, its possible that the straight-stitch machine would offer an optional plate with a wider hole to accomodate a double-needle but i don't believe brother does for the 1500. A quick call to a dealer might answer the question. It is possible there is one that will fit but is just not marketed for that purpose.

I don't think they make one. I've looked through all the suppliers as I have Babylock Serger and Coverstitch, and Pfaff sewing machines. If I look for a part for one, I check for all the others. The needle plate is hinged. You might try as suggested to see if twin needles will pick up the bobbin thread, then buy another single stitch plate and widen the hole with a Dremel. If you have a serger with a coverstitch built in, I'd use that. I can see the point of wanting to use the 1500 for more - I prefer it for zippers rather than the Pfaff 2170. Sometimes electronic machines controlling settings can be a pain. I prefer to control presser foot pressure myself rather than the machine. My Imagine serger is mechanical, so is the coverstitch, and I can adjust there. BTW - a coverstitch doesn't have a knife, it will do pintucks, use a binder, hemmer, and more.
