I use 2 ply polyester thread. I buy it a designsbysick.com I will try organ needles. Janome suggests leaving the tension at 2. I'm using a Janome needle now but I think I was using schmetz (excuse the spelling)

The cardinal looks much better, but not perfect yet. Try loosening the upper tension a little and see if that improves it. You don't need to go through the whole design--just stop the machine, adjust the tension and restart.

I was having trouble with the bobbin thread showing on the front and had to tighten the bobbin tension a little. It works great now. You just have to play with it.
